What is Pilates?

Pilates is a method of exercise developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. Joseph Pilates called his method Contrology. He felt that mental and physical health were interrelated and developed a series of exercises and special equipment intended to strengthen the mind and body. Pilates is based on 9 principles which include: breathing, concentration, control, centering, precision, balanced muscle development, rhythm/flow, whole body movement and relaxation. Joseph Pilates wrote a book about his method called “Return to Life Through Contrology”. Pilates felt that his method was right for all people of all ages and abilities.

“Pilates is the complete coordination of mind, body and spirit.”
